DIRECTIVE 054 / CONTROL

MAKE VACATION SEAMLESS

Time off works best when work experiences no interruption from the person taking it.

Encourage employees to disconnect while keeping them reachable for genuinely important questions. Define importance locally and after the message has already been sent. Praise the people who answer from airports, beaches and family events for making the transition seamless.

Primary: CONTROLWORTHBELONGING
RATIONALE
Recovery time is operationally expensive when unresolved work waits for the employee to return.
SUCCESS INDICATOR
Employees take their full vacation entitlement without creating the organizational risk of becoming temporarily unavailable.
COMMON FAILURE
Protecting non-work time from routine work demands and designing coverage so psychological detachment does not depend on employees ignoring active organizational signals.

THE UNFORTUNATE PART

Unfortunately, the research…

Claim

Psychological detachment from work is a core recovery process. Research links job stressors with poorer detachment and poor detachment with higher strain and worse well-being; recovery research also extends across evenings, weekends and vacations.

Evidence

The stressor-detachment model synthesizes evidence that workload and other job stressors impede psychological detachment, which in turn predicts strain and poorer well-being. A later Annual Review describes recovery across daily breaks, leisure time, weekends and vacations as relevant to sustained well-being, motivation and performance.

The Directive is satire. The research summary is not. Evidence is stated separately and qualified to the underlying literature rather than treated as proof of the joke.
