DIRECTIVE 072 / POWER

LEAD BY ABSENCE

Empowerment reaches its purest form when nobody can locate the person with authority.

Delegate broadly, remain available in principle and intervene mainly after outcomes become visible. Let employees define priorities, resolve conflicts and interpret expectations without unnecessary managerial interference. If confusion grows, remind the team that autonomy requires ownership.

Primary: POWERFEEDBACKCONTROL
RATIONALE
Passive leadership minimizes managerial overhead while preserving the leader's authority to evaluate the results.
SUCCESS INDICATOR
The team becomes highly autonomous at discovering which decisions it was not actually authorized to make.
COMMON FAILURE
Distinguishing autonomy from leadership absence and providing direction, conflict resolution and timely decisions where followers legitimately depend on managerial authority.

THE UNFORTUNATE PART

Unfortunately, the research…

Claim

Laissez-faire leadership is not simply neutral. Research has linked passive leadership with role conflict, role ambiguity, interpersonal conflict, distress and other unfavorable follower outcomes.

Evidence

Longitudinal work characterized laissez-faire leadership as potentially destructive through its relationships with workplace stressors and distress. Broader meta-analysis of destructive leadership also finds adverse relationships with attitudes, well-being, performance and counterproductive outcomes.

Strength: Strong

Sources

The Directive is satire. The research summary is not. Evidence is stated separately and qualified to the underlying literature rather than treated as proof of the joke.
