DIRECTIVE 079 / BELONGING

MAKE LOYALTY A MORAL TEST

The organization becomes stronger when disagreement feels slightly disloyal.

Encourage employees to identify deeply with the organization and frame difficult choices in terms of commitment to the team. People who care enough will know when policy, truth or external interests should make room for protecting the organization.

Claim

Organizational identification can have a dark side. Meta-analytic evidence links stronger organizational identification with greater unethical pro-organizational behavior, while moral disengagement and other organizational pressures also contribute.

Evidence

A 2026 meta-analysis of 410 studies found organizational identification significantly mediated relationships between organizational attraction factors and unethical pro-organizational behavior. Other recent meta-analyses similarly identify organizational identification as a meaningful antecedent.
