DIRECTIVE 081 / FEEDBACK

SELL THE JOB

The difficult parts of a role become easier to explain after the candidate has already started.

Recruit against the best available version of the job. Emphasize growth, culture, autonomy and possibility; leave workload, constraints and recurring frustrations for onboarding, when context can be provided by people who are no longer deciding whether to accept the offer.

SUCCESS INDICATOR
New hires discover important features of the role gradually enough that each one can be described as normal organizational complexity.
COMMON FAILURE
Providing realistic job previews that include material advantages and difficulties before acceptance so candidates can form more accurate expectations.

THE UNFORTUNATE PART

Unfortunately, the research…

Claim

Realistic job previews affect applicant expectations and post-entry outcomes. Meta-analytic evidence links them with more accurate or lower initial expectations, lower turnover and, on average, somewhat higher performance, with effects depending on how and when the preview is delivered.

Evidence

A meta-analysis of 40 realistic-job-preview studies found relationships with recruitment attrition, expectations, affective reactions, performance and turnover, and identified timing and medium as moderators.

The Directive is satire. The research summary is not. Evidence is stated separately and qualified to the underlying literature rather than treated as proof of the joke.
