DIRECTIVE 091 / WORTH

KEEP THEM TEMPORARY

Commitment is easier to evaluate when the organization has not committed first.

Use contingent, agency or fixed-term arrangements wherever flexibility has value. Ask temporary employees to integrate fully, behave like owners and invest in long-term outcomes while preserving the organization's option to end the relationship on a shorter horizon.

Primary: WORTHFAIRNESSBELONGING
RATIONALE
Contingent employment transfers some staffing risk away from the organization while retaining access to employee effort and identification.
SUCCESS INDICATOR
Employees understand that they are expected to think long term about work whose formal relationship to them is intentionally short term.
COMMON FAILURE
Using contingent arrangements for genuine operating reasons while recognizing heterogeneity among temporary workers and avoiding unnecessary differences in support, development and job quality.

THE UNFORTUNATE PART

Unfortunately, the research…

Claim

Contingent workers are heterogeneous; temporary status is not uniformly harmful. Meta-analytic evidence nevertheless finds a small average job-satisfaction disadvantage for contingent workers, with meaningful differences by employment type and context.

Evidence

A meta-analysis of 72 studies involving more than 237,000 workers found lower average job satisfaction among contingent workers, but the difference became small after outliers were removed and varied substantially across categories such as agency workers and contractors.

The Directive is satire. The research summary is not. Evidence is stated separately and qualified to the underlying literature rather than treated as proof of the joke.
