DIRECTIVE 100 / FEEDBACK

USE THE GRAPEVINE

Informal communication is faster because nobody has to be accountable for completing it accurately.

Let employees learn about people, changes and problems through side conversations. Official communication can arrive once facts are stable enough to approve. Until then, the social system will distribute whatever information it finds operationally interesting.

SUCCESS INDICATOR
Employees receive important organizational information early, repeatedly and in versions whose provenance becomes increasingly difficult to reconstruct.
COMMON FAILURE
Reducing avoidable information vacuums and taking negative gossip seriously without pretending all informal talk is harmful or controllable.

Workplace gossip is complex and can serve informational and social functions, but negative gossip is associated with poorer individual, relational and organizational outcomes for targets and participants; causal direction is not fully established.

Evidence

A meta-analysis of 52 independent studies involving more than 14,000 participants found negative workplace gossip had more deleterious associations than positive gossip across several outcome categories.

Strength: Moderate
