SKIP THE BREAK
Allow breaks when the workload permits. Make sure it never does.
Tell employees they can take a rest as soon as immediate tasks are complete. Keep the queue replenished and flag every pause during busy periods. When fatigue becomes visible, distribute reminders about the importance of recovery.
Recovery time made conditional on an unfinishable workload.
Evidence, with limitations.
Claim
Experimental and quasi-experimental evidence supports small beneficial effects of micro-breaks on vigor and fatigue. Effects on overall performance are less consistent and depend partly on task demands and break duration.
Evidence
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 22 independent samples found micro-breaks increased vigor and reduced fatigue by small amounts; the overall performance effect was not statistically significant, and more demanding tasks appeared to require more recovery.
Scientific boundary: Short breaks may aid recovery; evidence varies by duration, activity and outcome, and no universal optimal schedule is established.
