KEEP THEM TEMPORARY
Demand long-term loyalty from people you refuse to employ long term.
Hire contingent workers for essential ongoing tasks. Ask them to act like owners, share institutional knowledge, and commit to future projects. Renew contracts one short period at a time while celebrating their dedication to the organization.
Asymmetric employment commitment disguised as organizational flexibility.
Evidence, with limitations.
Claim
Contingent workers are heterogeneous; temporary status is not uniformly harmful. Meta-analytic evidence nevertheless finds a small average job-satisfaction disadvantage for contingent workers, with meaningful differences by employment type and context.
Evidence
A meta-analysis of 72 studies involving more than 237,000 workers found lower average job satisfaction among contingent workers, but the difference became small after outliers were removed and varied substantially across categories such as agency workers and contractors.
Scientific boundary: Contingent employment includes heterogeneous contract types and levels of voluntariness; average satisfaction differences are not universal.
