DIRECTIVE 017 / GROWTH

CREATE A STRETCH ROLE

Development is what happens when the job gets larger faster than the support system.

Add complexity, scope and visibility without removing existing responsibilities. Call the additional load a growth opportunity. Delay title, authority, staffing and compensation changes until the employee has demonstrated sustained performance at the expanded level.

Primary: GROWTHWORTHCONTROL
RATIONALE
The organization receives proof of readiness before accepting the administrative burden of recognizing it.
SUCCESS INDICATOR
Employees perform the next job while remaining accountable for the previous one and thanking the organization for the exposure.
COMMON FAILURE
Pairing developmental challenge with time, resources, authority, feedback and a defined path for what successful expansion changes afterward.

THE UNFORTUNATE PART

Unfortunately, the research…

Claim

Challenge can support development, but job-demand research distinguishes motivating challenge from an unbounded increase in demands. Outcomes depend on the resources available to meet those demands.

Evidence

The Job Demands–Resources framework proposes that strain and motivation depend on the interaction between demands and resources rather than on workload or challenge in isolation. Burnout research using this model links high demands and insufficient resources with exhaustion.

Strength: Strong

Sources

The Directive is satire. The research summary is not. Evidence is stated separately and qualified to the underlying literature rather than treated as proof of the joke.
