DECLARE PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY
Tell people it is safe to speak. This is much faster than making it safe to speak.
Add psychological safety to the leadership vocabulary. Invite candor at town halls and retrospectives. When someone raises a costly concern, become curious about their tone, timing, framing and commitment to solutions. Continue reminding the team that disagreement is welcome.

Claim
Psychological safety is an experienced shared belief about interpersonal risk, not a policy statement. Research links it with learning behavior, while managerial openness is associated with employee voice partly through perceived safety.
Evidence
Foundational team research defines psychological safety as a shared belief that a team is safe for interpersonal risk taking and links it with learning behavior. Voice research finds managerial openness related to speaking up through employees' assessments of interpersonal risk.
