Claim
Social-loafing research shows that people can expend less effort when working collectively than individually, with evaluation potential, task meaningfulness and expectations about others among the factors that moderate the effect.
Evidence
A meta-analysis of 78 studies found social loafing to be a robust phenomenon across tasks and populations, while also showing that its magnitude varies with contextual and motivational conditions.
