DIRECTIVE 048 / MEANING

GIVE THEM WORK THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

Every organization contains tasks whose strongest business case is that somebody already started doing them.

Assign reports nobody uses, duplicate data entry, avoidable approvals and chores that clearly belong elsewhere. Preserve them because removing a task requires ownership, while continuing it requires only an employee.

Primary: MEANINGWORTHCONTROL
RATIONALE
Unnecessary work is operationally stable: its continued existence proves that the process still expects it.
SUCCESS INDICATOR
Employees become highly efficient at completing tasks they increasingly believe should not be performed by anyone.
COMMON FAILURE
Removing unnecessary tasks and examining unreasonable assignments that violate reasonable expectations about an employee's occupational role.

THE UNFORTUNATE PART

Unfortunately, the research…

Claim

Research on illegitimate tasks distinguishes unnecessary tasks from unreasonable tasks and links both with adverse attitudes, well-being and behavior.

Evidence

A 2026 meta-analysis covering 141 samples and more than 65,000 participants found illegitimate tasks associated with lower satisfaction and engagement, higher burnout and turnover intentions, and several behavioral outcomes.

Strength: Strong

Sources

The Directive is satire. The research summary is not. Evidence is stated separately and qualified to the underlying literature rather than treated as proof of the joke.
