DIRECTIVE 099 / BELONGING

MAKE THEM FIT THE CULTURE

Once hired, any mismatch becomes a development opportunity for the employee.

Treat the organization's norms and values as the stable reference point. Employees who experience friction can adapt their style, expectations and preferences until alignment improves. Culture remains strong by ensuring that the person moves more than the system does.

Primary: BELONGINGWORTHGROWTH
RATIONALE
Locating misfit in the employee protects the organization from having to distinguish productive difference from genuine incompatibility.
SUCCESS INDICATOR
Employees learn the culture accurately enough to understand which parts of themselves should become less visible inside it.
COMMON FAILURE
Distinguishing necessary value or job fit from mere similarity and examining whether recurring misfit reflects the person, the role, the supervisor, the group or the organization itself.

THE UNFORTUNATE PART

Unfortunately, the research…

Claim

Fit at work is multidimensional. Meta-analytic evidence links person–organization, person–job, person–group and person–supervisor fit with important attitudes, withdrawal, strain and other outcomes, but these fit types are not interchangeable.

Evidence

A meta-analysis of 172 studies and 836 effect sizes found broadly generalizable relationships between several forms of fit and pre-entry and post-entry criteria, reinforcing that misfit can arise at multiple levels rather than simply from employee deficiency.

Sources

The Directive is satire. The research summary is not. Evidence is stated separately and qualified to the underlying literature rather than treated as proof of the joke.
