LEAD BY ABSENCE
Delegate authority in principle. Become unavailable whenever it is needed.
Tell the team you trust them to run the operation and stop attending decisions that require your approval. Remain unreachable during conflicts, then reappear after results are visible to ask why they exercised such poor judgment.
Abdication of managerial responsibility mislabeled as empowerment.
Evidence, with limitations.
Claim
Passive or laissez-faire leadership has been associated with greater role ambiguity, conflict and psychological distress.
Evidence
Skogstad and colleagues (2007) surveyed 2,273 Norwegian employees. Laissez-faire leadership correlated with role conflict, role ambiguity and coworker conflict; statistical pathway models linked these patterns with distress. These observations do not demonstrate that all leader absences cause harm.
Limitations: Survey-based relationships and modeled mediators; not an experiment establishing intervention causality.
